History of Stephanotis
Stephanotis floribunda is a tropical flowering vine native primarily to Madagascar, as well as some areas in African and Asia. It belongs to the milkweed subfamily of Asclepiadaceae and is cultivated for its lasting waxy flowers and fragrance. Despite the almost identical nature of its fragrance, Stephanotis is not related to Jasminum.
Its name is derived from the Greek word 'stephanos,' which means "crown," and 'otos,' which means "ear" - a reference to the shape of the flower.
Besides being a popular house and garden plant, it is also extensively used as a wedding flower. Very popular in bridal bouqets, corsages, it is also used to decorate wedding cakes.
