The Green Approach

Cultivation and production under earth friendly conditions are of prime importance and form the basis of our business approach to greenhouse operations. We have developed a comprehensive environmental stewardship program to identify and assess the ongoing environmental challenges related to greenhouse production.

Water Conservation and Efficiency
We collect, reuse and recycle greywater from our greenhouse irrigation system. This prevents chemically treated water from contaminating surface and groundwater in the environment. 

Integrated Pest Management
We operate an extensive Integrated Pest Management program. We rely on beneficial insects instead of pesticides to maximize crop health and prevent crop afflictions. Prevention is key: extensive monitoring enables us to identify problem pests right away before they become widespread. We monitor at each stage of plant growth, from propagation to spacing. IPM is a strategy that involves not only monitoring, but sanitation, record keeping and biological control. These measures enable us to produce healthy plants in an environment that is safe for our employees and a product that is safe for our customers. The benefits of earth friendly plants is extensive and we are proud to supply that better choice for you.

Recycled Packaging and Upgrades
Shipping and packaging products like boxes and displays are made of 100% recycled cardboard products.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation
Our greenhouses have undergone extensive facility upgrades that maximize energy efficiency. Temperature, humidity, shading, ventilation, artificial sodium lights and CO2 are all computer controlled.

Research and Development
Research is ongoing at Harster Greenhouses, into the new emerging technologies and strategies available to greenhouse operations.
